The subject of “who is the top Australian web host” is something that often comes up at various webmaster forums, especially among bloggers and webmasters.
At a recent local social media event, I met up with a few fellow bloggers and we started talking about useful blogger tools, SEO and blog webhosts. ( updated 12 September 2017)
I was surprised to come across some names in the local web hosting and web development field in Australia that I hadn’t heard about before. I asked some of my blogger friends who they had used among the different local web-hosting.
I also asked them about US based webhosts for their blogs, and also who they’d had good customer support and service from, website loading speed etc. to update my personal knowledge of web hosting as well as help me add to this post.
It was definitely a bag of surprises.
As with human nature, people tend to remember bad things, but I am exactly the opposite and I tend to remember the good things. So there were many comments on who were the worst host and peoples experiences with them.
Surprisingly, they were some difference of opinions good and bad on some of the same US based webhosts most things. Most of the popular us webhosting’s names were discussed like Bluehost, WP engine Hostgator and In motion. I got to know of two new aussie hosting providers Bullet proof and Quadra which I didn’t know of before.
I would suggest that you do your own research before choosing a web-host, but hopefully this information and listing below will help you in some way if you are looking to get a local webhost.
These providers have different pricing plans which can cover a wide range of budgets and needs for your hosting.
Given below is their lowest priced plans ( unfortunately some websites below make it hard to find their prices, so I have not listed them below)
I might have missed some that are good as well, but these were the Aussie ones listed above that we discussed and talked about in our chat.
Smarty Host and Crazy domains are not on this list as I have not used their hosting but only bought .au domains from them.
Some of them have a humongous transfer fee ( as i have found out) if you want to move your domains elsewhere, so please make it a point to check that before you buy domains from an Aussie domain provider.
Some of the popular local aussie forums like Whirlpool, DNTrade and Web Hosting Talk can give you a good idea of good local hosts, though most locals tend to bag the US service providers just because they are not Australian. (And that’s fair enough because they are un-Australian).
I have used a few of these local providers and they are good and prices for some of them have also come down in the last few years, but I mainly use US based website- hosting for my blogs, due to the price factor.
I use US web hosts because they do the job and are reliable for blogs with a monthly traffic of fewer than 100,000 hits to your blog. If you get more traffic on your blog, you should be earning well enough to sign up for a premium optimised or dedicated hosting company.
Below I am going to give some of the US based hosting that I prefer for my blogs and niche website, whihc will also work well for some small biz beginner websites. Here is the list.
Australian Web Hosting Comparison: Our Top 3 US Hosts
Bluehost is a web hosting company owned by Endurance International Group. It is one of the 20 largest web hosts, collectively hosting well over 2 million domains with its sister companies, HostMonster, FastDomain and iPage.
They offer many attractive features and very reasonable pricing. Before you choose a web host, however, you should carefully consider the company and whether it fits with your own plans.
Bluehost offers $200 in free offers when you sign up. This includes free advertising credits for Google and Facebook. By using these free advertising credits, you can start advertising with the respective websites and get traffic instantly.
Hostgator is a Houston-based provider of shared, reseller, virtual private server, and dedicated web hosting with an additional presence in Austin, Texas
Uptime – Very Good – 99.99%
Houston-based HostGator is one of the largest web hosts on the planet with over 9 million (!) domain names hosted. They boast partnerships with tiny tech titans Cisco and Linux. HostGator has been around since 2002, originally founded by Brent Oxley before being acquired a decade later by Endurance International Group (EIG)
GoDaddy Inc. is an American publicly traded Internet domain registrar and web hosting company. GoDaddy is best known as a domain registrar – and, to be certain, it is one of the largest in the world – but they also offer a wide range of other web services, including hosting.
Godaddy hosts 7 of my sites through its Linux hosting offering and works perfectly all of the time. They have ridiculously cheap and reliable service. GoDaddy’s hosting is scalable to your needs and boasts a 99.9% uptime.
They offer many attractive features and very reasonable pricing. GoDaddy hosting comes in three sizes: Economy, Deluxe, and Ultimate.
The Economy plan is probably all most freelance individual webmasters will ever need. Although disk space is limited to 10 GB, that is actually more than most websites will ever use. The Deluxe package allows for 150 GB disk space – a marked improvement over the Economy plan – 500 e-mail accounts and 25, 1 GB MySQL databases
The regular pricing for Godaddy shared hosting(economy) is $10.99 per month. The company, however, runs frequent specials. Right now, for example, you can get hosting for as low as $5.49 per month when you sign up through partnering sites such as start-a-website.info!
The major benefit to hosting through GoDaddy is that you only have to deal with one company – for your domains, hosting and other related website services like selling domains , domain auctions and SEO.
Support is a very important factor when choosing a website-hosting company, because when trouble strikes you need good service, otherwise it can be very frustrating and you could end up losing traffic and money to your blog if things are not fixed quickly.
Before you make your choice , do check up on – If 24/7 support is available, you can call up and speak to a person if needed.
Check also if upgrade to optimised hosting is available, price for extra bandwidth or storage space, if they provide free or paid backups, do they sell SSL certificates.
Are you looking for a good wordpress theme for your new blog. What if you could design your own website just as if you were working in a easy to use program like Microsoft Word ,adding pictures, choosing font, adding headers,c hanging colors of font and background and more. Well the new divi builder theme by elegant wordpress themes is just as easy as that.
Free wordpress themes vs paid themes
Many People opt for free themes and regret later due to many reasons but If you got no budget then obviously – free is an option, but again – if you can afford even a little bit of money, then go for a paid theme, it pays back.
Free comes with its own limitations – Here are some reason to go for a reasonably priced good theme.
Authors of free themes are late in updating their themes with new updates required
They often break with wordpress updates due to poor coding in the theme.
The Free theme designer gets involved in something else and forgets to provide support to his free theme
I have been a elegant WP themes member for 8+ years now because their prices for wordpress themes are so ridiculously low. I mean common just do a search online for wordpress themes, who would give 85+ premium website themes just for $89.
Price Does matter with WP themes
In fact go search on theme forest, one of the biggest website design template providers and you can see that buying just one good wp design template costs you like $35 dollars. You will find cheaper ones on theme forest, but they are not premium in the sense, due to poor support and code etc. The good ones there cost $40 and over per theme.
Okay, coming back to the topic -why I am writing this post today is because of the launch of the new word press divi theme by elegant. This new divi theme with the visual builder that they have just released is a theme design that can literally take the shape of 100 different designs all from one template.
The Divi theme price ($89 for Yearly membership – Includes 87 themes and plugins)
As I told you that you get 85+ themes for a yearly membership price of $89 and for lifetime access if you can afford it at $249 its worth it. It’s so easy to design your blog with the new wysiwyg website builder that you could think you are designing a website in word. Hold on what’s wysiwyg (look above)
As elegant theme themselves say –
Our pricing is simple. Purchase a single membership for one low price and get access to our entire collection of themes and plugins. You can use those themes and plugins on as many websites as you like (client sites too).
You could pay just the one year membership fee for this one new theme IMHO and get triple the value over the years for just the purchased theme , the other themes and plugins come as a bonus. In fact this theme will put many plugins that offer creating custom wordpress pages and websites our of business.
Nick Roach is the person who runs things at elegant themes and he has always looked out for his customers , by keeping prices low even when he could easily bump it up for what they provide.
He has gone all out on this one supporting his designers to give the best value to the customers with this new divi design. Its pretty much an all in one wordpress design with customisation possible from top to end.
So what is a good wordpress theme ?
Well the obivious is first, that it looks nice and presents well, here are some additional things to look out for in a wordpress theme.
Responsive – the theme should be responsive and load properly on desktops as well as smartphones, tablets
Light on code – the theme should be coded well and light in size – so that it doesn’t slow down your website.
Compatible – many poorly coded themes get affected/distorted by installed WP plugins or updates to wordpress
Flexibility – there should be flexibility to change colors of design, fonts, add extra code, SEO options inbuilt into template.
Professional – the theme design should suit the niche and look professional.
I’m glad to say the themes and plugins from elegant meet all of these standards or requirements.
With the new divi template, there are hundreds of customisations possible due to its flexibility in its design. But just lets have a look at some that stand out according to me.
The new Elegant & divi wordpress theme features:
Access To All Themes
Access To All Plugins(This plan includes full access to all of our plugins, as well as all new plugins that are created during your membership.)
Unlimited Website Usage
One Time Fee
Specific to DIVI
Real Time Design
When you make a change to your page or design, everything is updated instantly right before your eyes. Design and edit instantly!
Jump-start your design process by using one of the 20+ pre-made layouts that ship with the builder. Boon for the time conscious person or plain lazy peeps.
Mix and match
Divi comes with 46 different content elements. Mix, match and build just about anything you can imagine.
Here is a promo video from divi, explaining features in short summary
If I was not a customer of elegant themes today and knew what i knew about their themes, I definitely would sign up merely for their new divi theme and consider the rest of them as a bonus.
If you are looking for a new wordpress why procrastinate, you got nothing to lose here- but just gain 85+ awesome word press design templates for your website or future websites. Browse their amazing themes here. And good luck to your new venture
Post Updated 5 September 2017. Go daddy is one of the biggest domain registrars in the US , Inspite of being quite well known and being one of the most popular advertisers on the Superbowl “Americas premier sporting event” they have taken a beating to their online reputation on various websites and forums, when it comes to website hosting and I don’t know why.
You search online and you can get many bad reviews about Godaddy. I got my first godaddy hosting account and domain with great nervousness almost 5+ years ago, in spite of reading all the online bad reviews about Godaddy.com.
I purchased webhosting at that time from them, just because they were offering a $1 a month hosting offer to me which sounded really cheap.
I just said to myself – what the heck and signed up it was muich less to lose at that price. I have collected and listed some current deals just below and they are some here on this website as well.
Funny thing is I wasn’t disappointed with that cheap web-hosting plan purchase. I have since then got another second hosting account with Godaddy and have like 30 + domains on this second account as well.
This hosting that I purchased was most certainly a very cheap price at that time. If I remember right, it was $1 a month hosting, and it was definite cheap compared to the other website-hosting deals going around at that time of roughly $5 to $6 a month.
So I just grabbed it and set up a few niche blogs and also an affiliate site to promote products online.
The niche site did well and I also made money from the affiliate website and so my initial investment was already covered ten times in that year.
So was godaddy worth it ?
Well as I was just starting new websites, I was not really tracking stuff like if they were 100% online all the time or then how slow my website was loading, but as my websites were new and did not use much bandwidth and resources everything was good and chugging along fine.
In fact go daddy at that time already had a 99% uptime guarantee, so I never had to worry.
A little later – I also purchased Hostgator and Dreamhost hosting plans for more projects and so I got to test them out as well. I had issues with my accounts getting hacked and slow servers speed and downtime in initial years with one of them.
I got emails from them, telling me that my website was hogging their server resources , when i didn’t even have like 100 hits a days , while my godaddy account was fine and no emails from them , so from that point of view surely GDaddy was a winner .
I’m still with hostgator and blue host and they are doing fine. As far as the other host goes , they have stopped sending me resources hogging emails, or your account will be limited etc.. So that’s definitely good sign from the hosting industry and I still until today use go daddy hosting for several of my websites.
The best thing about godaddy that I like – is that they have local American support that you can pick up the phone and speak too anytime. I always get to speak to a person pretty soon without staying too long on the line.
The few times that I called support, I was actually attended to by knowledgeable staff who managed to sort out the problem I had.
If you are looking to get a website or blog started and you are on a low spend budget, until you find your bearings – Do try one of go daddy’s cheap deals above.

( Which will have their brand included in the url – Like oldloves.tumblr.com url after the blog name you choose – this is an instant giveaway of a free service blog)
So if you are getting the option of setting up a blog with a proper domain name like www.myblog.com instead and that too for just in ten dollars, then why settle for a blogger service with a longer url that is hard to remember and also does not look as professional.
Blogging now increasingly has been taken up by people not only as a hobby or self-expression medium, but also as a means to earn money online. And if you plan to take your blogging serious at some part of time, its best to go with a nice looking short url right from the start.
There are successful bloggers earning a full time income and some by just blogging. If you can attract eyeballs to your blog (traffic) and can gain a huge following .. then earning money from your blog becomes easier. You can easily make a blog that looks good and also deos the job of a website as good as any pro blogger website at a minimum cost using free services.
The larger the traffic you get to your blog …the higher the revenue earning potential your blog will have. Below I will show you how to make a blog for yourself on the cheap.
Making a nice looking blog in just $10 or under
Coming back to the point, YES! a Blog can be built in under $10 dollars.
In fact you can have a blog for free as well from blogspot or tumblr or other blogging platforms , but then you dont automatically get a custom unique domain name for your blog. To get that free blog with a longer url you just need to sign up with them and start blogging. The only problem is you will also have limitations to what you can do with your blog when you want to monetise it in the future.
Today the method I am going to show you is still half and half , so you are using a free blog service, but tehn you are paying to get a proper domain name , so that your blog url looks professional.
If you really want to dress it up like a pro thne you might need to spend a little bit mroe than $10 to get a professional looking custom theme for Eg. here this one, but there are free themes also that look quite good for eg , this one.
If you get a free blog from google blogger(blogspot), you are also at risk of Google deleting or banning your blog – if you go against any one of their policies and trust me they have many restrictive policies and you possibly wouldn’t even know every one of them. I myself had a blog deleted a long time ago for no fault of mine and learned the hard way to always have full control of your blog and so decided to get a self hosted blog.
However the method I am going to show you today makes use of a free blogging service and a cheaply purchased domain name to get your blog made in under $10.
They are many other free blog services other than google blogger like tumblr , Weebly ,Typepad etc but they all have their own set of restrictions. But if you want to save even on a $10 spend to build a blog, then this free blogging service is the way to go and you will have to make do with a longer url and limitations and restrictions on what you can do with your blog.
If you truly are determined and dedicated to get your blog started and established you can use our this provided method which uses a mix of a paid ( for domain) as well as a free service to get your first blog online and all under $10 . This method uses a cheap discounted domain from godaddy.com and free blogger blogging service to start off your blog.
So while you get your own personalised blog domain name like for eg. www.katperry.com<http://www.katperry.com> or whateva name you choose for a couple of Dollars , you are using the free google blogger service for space to host your Content (writing and articles ) and the free blogger service does the hard backend work of keeping your blog running and alive on the internet.(normally if you didn’t have the free blogger service hosting your blog – you would need to get a decent hosting account to host your self hosted blog. A Self hosted blog gives you 100% control of your blog and much more freedom for the design and look of your blog)
How to get your $10 blog
While I do recommend getting a self hosted blog if you can afford it ($3.95 a month), If you are on a low budget then this is the way to go.
With this method you only pay (0.99 Cents to $12) depending on current deal available for domains and get hosting for free from the free blogging provider), so if yo manage to get a domain name for say 0.99 cents then you have just got yourself a blog with a short url for just 0.99 cents ( i.e $9 dollars less than what I promised)
For you to get you $10 blog all set up, you will need two things
1st – A Cheap domain costing a few dollars from godaddy domains(currently 0.99cents)
2nd – You will need to sign up with free Google blogging service called blogspot/blogger for your free blog(hosting).
How to get a domain name for $1.99 or a cheap price(0.99cents).
Go to godaddy.com and you will see a search button on the top of the page, type in a domain name or blog name in here and click search to see if a blog name you prefer is available.
Godaddy.com quite often run these cheap domain deals, if your lucky you might grab a domain name sometimes for as low as 0.99 cents. Check here for any current go daddy domain deal . I prefer godaddy.com as they are one of the largest domain providers on the internet and have good service record while also being competitive in pricing compared to others. You can use my coupon code or discount referral link if you like.
When you find a appropriate name proceed to buy and register it. Soon as you have registered your domain, you will get more details about your registration sent in the email. Now you will need to point your this purchased domain name to your free blogger blog which you have already set up by registering with google free blogger service here. if you haven’t already set up – Link to register and set up is below
Registering with blogger or tumblr or free blog service
The next step is to get your free blogger blog if you haven’t already,
go to blogger.com and register yourself for a free blog by following the easy to follow instructions and you will have set up a free blogger blog in a few minutes. You will need to note down and keep your registration and login details and the blogspot domain name. You will need this to set up the blog with your purchased short domain name which you got from godaddy.
[ Now i have suggested above that you get a domain name from godaddy because because if you use the default blogger domain which you get when you sign up for the free blogger service you domain would be something like “http://www.janesblog.blogspot.com” but if you get a domain from godaddy your domain url could be more shorter and professional looking like “www.janesblog.com” and easier for your viewers to recollect your blog name and also type it in their browsers. A custom domain like this also gives a more professional impression that you take your blog/website or blogging seriously.
By getting and signing up for the free blogger blog service you are essentially saving on a blog hosting service (check out my blog hosting comparison post here) that can cost anywhere between $100 to 250 a year.
The difference between this cheap method and a professional blogger who would buy a domain and get a hosting service (totally approx $260) to set up a blog is the price factor, with this cheap method you still get a custom domain name for your blog but you set up your blog at a much cheaper price with free google blogger hosting.
You will still have google watching over your shoulder with this free blogger service you are using ,but as long as you don’t do anything silly to upset google your blog will be fine and not deleted or banned.
The benefits of this $10 cheapie blog setup
In short you spend under $10 for the whole blog – you dont even need to bother about ongoing maintenance as google free blogger service takes care of that and you can still earn money from your blog.
With this method, you own your www. blogname of your blog that your bought and you can transfer your free blog to a paid hosting service anytime you like to get it updated to a paid professional custom wordpress blog. There are no restrictions or monitoring by google when you move it away from blogger to custom hosted paid wordpress blog.
What is a custom hosted paid wordpress blog ?
Its a self-hosted WordPress blog that most professional bloggers use. To set this up You buy hosting for a year from a hosting company and you can set up your blog through word press which is one of the worlds most popular and easy blogging software. Most hosting companies nowdays make the process of starting this blog and moving your blog to them easy by offering the transfer service free or offering support to set up your blog.
Most professional bloggers upgrade to a wordpress self hosted blog ( costing anywhere from $80 to 200 a year) once they can afford it. Self-hosted blog means you have you own hosting provider and have you blog residing with that hosting service. Your domain name don’t need to be with the same provider, but can be also bought with the same provider. I prefer to buy my domains from godaddy and buy my hosting separately for my blogs as I have multiple domains and blogs and moving or transferring them becomes easier if you change hosting companies when you have your domains with godaddy.
Let me know if you need any help setting up a cheapie blog by either leaving a comment here are getting in touch via my contact page .
